FOOD IS PERSONAL. SO ARE THE STORIES BEHIND IT.

Food, Culture & the People Behind It

Food is more than what appears on a plate or inside a package. It carries memories, traditions, livelihoods, skills and histories. The Human Side of Food explores the people and relationships behind what we grow, make, sell, cook and share.

CURRENT PROJECT

The Humans Behind Chocolate

Rocktoberfest · Taylor Park · Saturday, September 26, 2026

At this interactive booth, The Human Side of Food will invite visitors to look beyond the familiar chocolate bar and notice the people, knowledge and work behind it. Through visual displays, cacao pod replicas, individually wrapped chocolate samples and a short Chocolate Field Note activity, visitors can slow down, observe food with the curiosity of an anthropologist and consider the human story behind what they are tasting.

About me

Hello! I’m Diya Bathula, a student at Millburn High School with an interest in food systems, human cultures and the stories behind ordinary parts of our lives. My curiosity began with baking and chocolate, but it soon grew into larger questions about the people, knowledge and work behind food.
